Artist information
Laura Masotto is a classically trained Italian violinist and composer in constant exploration. She began studying violin at the age of five and graduated from the Conservatory of Verona. She began her career at age fifteen, giving concerts in chamber and symphony orchestras throughout Europe.
Over the years Laura has worked on theater projects such as Michele Serra’s “Father and Son,” performed live and recorded albums with internationally renowned artists such as Patty Pravo, Sergio Cammariere, Gino Paoli, John Bonnar, and Lisa Gerrard. In 2017 she recorded strings for the soundtrack of “Gli Asteroidi” by Germano Maccioni, with arrangements by Lorenzo Esposito Fornasari, distributed by Istituto Luce Cinecittà in selection at the international competition of the Locarno Film Festival. In 2018 she composed the original soundtrack for the video installation “Pattern for a Relationship” by the Duae collective, part of the “Besos” project on display at “Fabra i Coats” in Barcelona and “Ci.clo” in Porto.
In 2019 she released her first solo album “Fireflies,” composed with solo violin and looper which was showcased live in Los Angeles with Sofar Sounds. The track “Lucciola” is the soundtrack for the short film “And I shall Rise” by Meena Ayittey. In 2020 she released a soundtrack album called “Here and Now” (Flipper Music) composed during her six-month artist residency at Fabra I Coats in Barcelona.
In 2021 she signed with the Berlin label 7K! and released the album “WE”, which blends strings and electronics and includes collaborations with Roger Goula, Hior Chronik, and Atōmi. In 2022 began her collaboration with Deutsche Grammophon: she composed a piece entitled “Sol Levante” for Mari Samuelsen’s album “Lys” and contributed a reworking of the classical composition “Shéhérazede” to the collection “Summer Tales.” She collaborates with choreographer Chiara Frigo and her music is the soundtrack for the dance show “Miss LaLa” with Pina Bausch Tanztheater dancer Marigia Maggipinto.
She has contributed to several label compilations, including “Duet Layers” (with artists such as Hania Rani, Colin Stetson, Niklas Paschburg) released by 7K!. In 2023 she recorded two soundtracks composed by Lorenzo Esposito Fornasari: for the movie “100 Preludi” by Alessandra Pescetta with the voice of Lisa Gerrard and for “La Seconda Vita” by Vito Palmieri with the voice of Cristina Donà.
She has played as an opening act for artists such as Hania Rani, Joep Beving, Federico Albanese and Manu Delago.
On March 1, 2024, her new album “The Spirit of Things” was released by 7K!. The video for the track “Under the Bombs” was made by visual artist Nicholas Bertini and premiered at the Bridge Film Festival in Verona. The album was reviewed by international magazines such as “The Wire” and “Electronic Sound” and was presented live on Radio Rai 3 “Piazza Verdi”.
